Achieving Precision: Cutting curved shapes in fabric

Cutting curved shapes in fabric can be a daunting task. Unlike straight lines, curves require a different approach and a steady hand to achieve precision. However, with the right tools and techniques, it can become super easy. In this article, we'll explore the tools and techniques you can use to achieve precision when cutting curved shapes in fabric. So grab your scissors, rotary cutter, or specialty cutting tool, and let's get started!

Understanding curved shapes

The complicated curve will be one that your rotary cutter cannot easily follow, such as the bottom of an armhole or the curve of the end of a shirt collar. If the curve you need to cut is very rounded, this is where you need to be more careful.

If you're like me and cut all your fabric with a rotary cutter, you'll end up messing up and cutting too much fabric.

The important thing is not to go too fast. Try to concentrate and not to rush. The easiest way to do this is to have good scissors with a tip that cuts without too much effort. If your fabric is thin, you can use small scissors. This will give you a better grip to cut with precision.

Rotary cutters are another popular tool for cutting fabric. They consist of a handle and a circular blade that rotates as you cut. Rotary cutters are great for cutting long, straight lines, but they can also be used for cutting curves. They require a cutting mat and a ruler for accuracy.

There are also curved scissors or templates but as I have never used one, so I cannot advise you on this.

Techniques for cutting curved shapes

Now that you have your tools, let's talk about the techniques you can use to cut curved shapes in fabric.

When cutting your fabric, it is best to know where you are going to cut. You can mark your fabric with chalk, follow the outline of a pattern or even (much more rarely) follow a pin line.

With scissors, lay your fabric flat and leave the bottom part of the scissors on the table. This will make your fabric move as little as possible. However, as the fabric will be lifted off the table, there may be a slight shift. Hence the use of small, thin scissors to minimise the offset.

If you are using a rotary cutter, don't roll your blade. Instead, press it down and then lift up as you make curves. This will create a slightly jagged curve but is the easiest way to stay close to your pattern line when cutting curves from jersey fabric

Tips for achieving precision

No matter which technique or tool you choose, there are some tips you can follow to achieve precision when cutting curved shapes in fabric.

First of all, have good tools that cut well. As you need to be precise it is best to have the sharpest tools possible. Have your scissors checked regularly by a grinder or change the blade when you see that it is not cutting very well.

Don't go too fast. It is when you are in a hurry that you make the most mistakes.

Many times I have cut my fabric too fast and the curve was cut wrong. As a result, my sleeve looked weird and I had to cheat a little by reducing the seam allowance in some places.

Cutting curved shapes in fabric can be a challenge, but with the right tools and techniques, it can be a rewarding experience. By understanding the different tools and techniques available, and following our tips for achieving precision, you can cut curves like a pro. So grab your scissors or rotary cutter, and start cutting those curves!
